OUT IN JAPAN project, 2015

by photographer Leslie Kee

Portraits of 111 Japanese LGBT people from teenagers to 60-somethings, including gay manga icon Gengoroh Tagame (田亀源五郎, top). The photos will be on exhibition at Gap’s flagship Harajuku store from April 21st to April 28th, coinciding with Tokyo Rainbow Pride.

Sponsored by Gap (#rainbowgap) and the Japanese production of Rent (!), coming to Tokyo’s Theatre Creation (シアタークリエ) this September.

In a country where fewer than 19% of major corporations offer workplace protections to their queer workers, Gap has been notable for its visibility as a supporter of LGBT rights. It’s nice to see The Gap champion the work of the great fashion photographer Leslie Kee, who was unjustly arrested in 2013 on obscenity charges in a targeted censorship campaign.

Reblog if Tagame is giving you life.
