The Queer Japan Project is live on Kickstarter!

Please help us spread the word on social media, and consider donating to this independent documentary providing portraits of artists, activists, and everyday people from across the spectrum of gender and sexuality in Japan.

I’m incredibly excited to announce the new documentary project I’ve been working on with Anne Ishii: Queer Japan! The film features a really amazing group of people including:

  • Groundbreaking drag queen, artist, film critic, and renaissance woman Vivienne Sato.
  • Gay manga master and art historian Gengoroh Tagame, whose crossover success with My Brother’s Husband is introducing mainstream manga readers to gay issues.
  • Feminist manko [pussy] artist Rokudenashiko, arrested for her 3D-printed manko kayak last year, and currently fighting obscenity charges from a second arrest in court.
  • HIV activist, writer, and Tagame’s G-men magazine founding editor, Hiroshi Hasegawa
  • Visual artist Nogi Sumiko, dancer Atsushi Matsuda of the renowned Butoh group DAIRAKUDAKAN, and queer theorist/bar owner Masaki C. Matsumoto.

The film will be shot in locations around Japan from April-August 2016, and debut at film festivals next year. We’re looking to raise production funds to tell these fascinating stories and expand the pool of participants to include even more LGBTQ (and beyond) individuals. Through in-depth interviews and slice-of-life vignettes, Queer Japan will celebrate queer expression in Japan in many of its dazzling, prismatic varieties.

Check it out on Kickstarter and please help us get the word out!
