Around 14,000 people attended this year’s parade, including Japan’s first lady, Akie Abe (長谷川博史, pictured right in the video still above). Standing next to Mrs. Abe on the float is Hiroshi Hasegawa (長谷川博史), a well-respected HIV activist who also co-founded G-men magazine with Gengoroh Tagame (田亀源五郎) in 1994.

Tokyo Rainbow Pride takes place on Sunday, April 27 in Harajuku’s Yoyogi Park. It’s part of Tokyo's Rainbow Week, which runs from April 26th to May 6th.

The mascot is a flying squirrel that lives in Shinjuku named Tobe. The name combines the Japanese word “fly” (飛ぶ) and the English word “to be” signifying personal expression.
