Photos from the SuperQueeroes queer comics exhibition at the Schwules Museum in Berlin!

The exhibition features queer comics from all over the world, including a number of LGBTI artists from Japan. It’s so exciting to see some of our MASSIVE products, and works by Gengoroh Tagame, Jiraiya, and lesbian mangaka Nakamura Ching given the museum treatment. They even have original copies of the seminal Japanese magazines Fuzoku Kitan (1960s) and Bara Komi (1986) on display!

All off this is presented alongside the works of artists like Tom of Finland, Alison Bechdel, Ralf König, and dozens more influential queer comics artists from all around the world. It makes me happy to see not only gay manga, but queer comics in general treated with reverence and respect within a museum. The show is open until June 26th, 2016, so go check it out if you have the chance!

Modern Love: 20th Century Japanese Erotic Art is the third in a trilogy of exhibitions by the Honolulu Museum of Art exploring Japanese erotic art from shunga woodblock prints of the Edo period to contemporary manga. Modern Love features some of the most impactful erotic images of the 20th Century, including the rope bound kinbaku photography of Nobuyoshi Araki, modern woodblock prints by Masami Teraoka, and manga by many of my personal favorites: Moyoco Anno, ero guro master Suehiro Maruo, BL visionary Est Em, and of course, Gengoroh Tagame. The exhibition also wisely includes some beautiful lesbian-themed yuri manga by Jin Takemiya and Kiriko Nananan.

Modern Love is open through March 15, 2015 at the Honolulu Museum of Art.
